Glass Charter Award
Employees’ commitment to safety has won a St Helens firm a major award. The tremendous health & safety standards at NGF EUROPE Ltd’s Lea Green site have been recognised by the Glass Industry’s Charter Awards, which bestowed the Best Safety Performance for companies employing up to 250 employees on the St Helens firm, during the Annual Glass Industry Health & Safety Conference. The site’s 220 employees are encouraged to take a proactive role in accident prevention by using a computer-based incident reporting system. If an employee notices a potential hazard, he or she can make an entry on the computer system, which results in the hazard being eradicated. Days lost to accidents have dramatically dropped from 112 in 2006 to zero well into 2008. The computer system is just part of an overall plan aimed at making site safety the main priority. Other initiatives include a site improvement plan, a new system of review and evaluation and a series of training workshops. Standard operating procedures have also been introduced for all processes and tasks at the Lea Green site. “Every employee can feel proud of their achievements in bringing about this recognition. Safety is our top priority and to be awarded for our efforts emphasises individual commitment and the tremendous moves to keep people safe,” explained managing director Brian Kelly. Judith Hackitt CBE, Chair of the Health and Safety Executive, presented the award – an engraved glass sculpture on a glass plinth – at the recent awards conference, held at the Bagden Hall Country House Hotel, Huddersfield.
